Why Your Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping — and When to Call an Electrician

A tripping circuit breaker is one of the most common calls we get — and it's one of the most misunderstood. A lot of homeowners assume a tripping breaker just means they're plugging in too much, flip it back on, and move on. Sometimes that's right. But often, a repeatedly tripping breaker is the electrical system doing exactly what it's supposed to — trying to get your attention before something gets worse.

Here's how to think through what's causing it.

What a breaker actually does

A circuit breaker is a safety device designed to interrupt the flow of electricity when the current on a circuit exceeds a safe level. When it trips, it's not malfunctioning — it's protecting your wiring from overheating, which is one of the primary causes of electrical fires.

The question is why it's tripping, because the answer determines what needs to happen next.

The three main causes

Overloaded circuit

The most common cause. You're pulling more power than the circuit is rated for. Common scenarios: a 15-amp kitchen circuit running a microwave, a coffee maker, and a toaster at the same time; a bedroom circuit with too many devices on power strips; an older home with a single circuit serving too large an area. The solution is usually redistributing loads, adding a dedicated circuit, or upgrading the panel.

Short circuit

A short circuit occurs when a hot wire contacts a neutral wire or a ground — either in the wiring itself, in an outlet or switch, or in a plugged-in device. Short circuits trip breakers immediately and forcefully. If a breaker trips the instant you flip it back on, or immediately when you plug in a specific device, a short circuit is likely. A short in a device is usually resolved by replacing the device. A short in the wiring requires professional diagnosis and repair.

Ground fault

A ground fault is similar to a short circuit but involves current leaking to the ground conductor. It's particularly dangerous near water, which is why GFCI protection is required in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas. If a GFCI breaker trips repeatedly, there may be a ground fault somewhere on that circuit.

When resetting is fine vs. when it's not

Resetting a tripped breaker is fine when you know exactly why it tripped — you were running three high-draw appliances on the same circuit and the breaker did its job. Unplug something, redistribute the load, reset the breaker, and monitor it.

Resetting is not the right move when:

  • The breaker trips immediately or within seconds of being reset
  • You can't identify any obvious cause
  • You smell burning or notice any heat near the panel
  • The same breaker has been tripping repeatedly for days or weeks

In those cases, the breaker is trying to tell you something that resetting won't fix.

What about the breaker itself?

Breakers don't last forever. A breaker that trips at lower loads than it used to, or that feels loose or wiggly in the panel, may be failing. A failing breaker that doesn't trip when it should is more dangerous than one that trips too easily — it removes the protection the circuit is supposed to have.

If your breaker is older and has been tripping more frequently without an obvious change in your electrical usage, the breaker itself may need to be replaced.

The sudden interruption of power can occasionally cause issues with sensitive electronics, but in most cases, a breaker trip is less damaging than what would happen without it.
